Read All About It-Favorite Books of 2016 (so far)

Of The Sea-Favorite Books of 2016
While reading has always been a favorite pastime of mine, I can rarely find the time to actually sit and get through an entire book. BUT these books have changed everything! These books I have successfully read from front to back. And let me tell you, these are my absolute favorites.

If you're looking for some feel good entertainment for your eyes, look no further.

You Are A Badass: You know that moment when you're overwhelmed by the trials in life that seem to do nothing but defeat you? You know when you're doubting every decision you've ever made and will make? That's when you need this book. Hello, mood booster!

Find Your Happy Daily Mantras: This book is pretty self-explanitory. If you find yourself in a negative rut, this book is an awesome way to put life into perspective. It has a mantra for every day, so make it a part of your daily routine!

Why Not Me?: First of all, if you haven't discovered the delightful Mindy Kaling, it's time. This is her second book, and I don't know which one I love more. I have nothing else to say except read it!

Modern Romance: This book kind of took me by surprise. It's essentially a study on the way we date, in comparison to those in the generation before us. It specifically focuses on dating in the day of social media, which honestly fascinates me. And if you're a fan of Anziz Ansari, you'll love his hilarious tidbits.

I'm always looking for some new reads, so what are your favorite books this year?

This is your life. Do what you love, and do it often

"This is your life. Do what you love, and do it often" From Of The Sea

Do you ever go to a different city or state and realize how small you are? The problems and concerns I once had suddenly seem silly and insignificant.

Something as effortless as snowfall made me forget all of my day-to-day worries.

My challenge for myself and you is to take some time to get away. Be content with sitting and just being. Smell the cool air, get some coffee, and do something for yourself just because!

I Just Wanna Run...

I'll be the first to admit, I am not an outdoorsy type girl. (Although if you find me on Tinder, my profile might say otherwise...)
Let me first say, I am absolutely astonished by nature-the way the sky changes, the way snowflakes look, and the way tall redwood trees smell.
I am SO fortunate to live in California where I get it all within 2-4 hour drive!
But, I will say, I do appreciate nature from in the car...with air conditioning & a cozy seat.
When I told my friends I wanted to go on a nature walk, I didn't think that would translate to, "let's go on a hike." But I was wrong.
Long story short, my "nature walk" turned into an 8 mile hike; something that this non-outdoorsy body of mine is not used to.

But oh man, was it pretty!

In 2016, Love Yourself

This year has been quite the whirlwind, to say the least.

I witnessed people close (and not as close) to me find happiness and marry the love of their life. Meanwhile, I was falling in and out of like with people who will likely stay a 2015 memory.

I made new friends, and then lost them.

I traveled and made memories.
I stayed up late and woke up early.
I got a permanent job where I spend 40 hours a week with some pretty awesome people.
My patience was tested, time was wasted, and time stood still.

Have I learned a lot? Yes! Have I learned everything? Most definitely not. But this year was filled with lots of lessons and experiences that, I believe, could have only been written out just for me by God himself.

Do I sometimes stare at my English degree and wonder what the heck I'm doing? Allll the freaking time. Am I okay with that? Eh, for the most part.

I was reading a book recently, and at the end of every chapter, it said, "love yourself." It made me think, do I love myself the way I should? Probably not. I'm always apologizing and beating myself down for things that are very human and very okay.

This year, I resolve to:

1. Love my body
Provide myself with nourishing foods and allow myself to get up and move

2. Love what I do
Fully embrace my job, future job, and hobbies. Become engulfed in things that make me a better person, and celebrate my achievements-both big and small.

3. Love those who love me
Love on others, and accept the love back from these people that I deserve.

4. Love my social media
I often feel so pressured to make myself look so fun and creative through my social media. Loving yourself also means loving the things you think are great, and memories you want to share.

What are your 2016 resolutions?

Oh Christmas Tree...

Of The Sea- "Oh Christmas Tree: Inspiration"

Not to sound like every other human being on the planet...but I LOVE the holiday season. The lights, the colors, the cold weather...

After Thanksgiving wraps up, my family and I go straight to decorating for Christmas. And while I love strands of lights, wreaths, and little figurines, my favorite decoration is the Christmas tree. This is what I always look for when I walk into a decorated home, and decorating the tree is my favorite family tradition.

(Remember those little ornaments you made in school that your parents refuse to throw away...?)

Currently, I'm really into themed Christmas trees. At my house, we usually have one large tree with all our cute ornaments that we've obtained over the years, and another smaller tree with a certain color theme, like all gold or all silver. I've been pinning so many tree images to my Christmas board, and I've noticed that themed Christmas trees seem to be everywhere.

Want to try revamping your traditional tree? Here are some of my favorite trees for inspiration!

What I’ve Learned During My First Year Of Post-Grad Life

I graduated college May 2014, so my one year mark of living in the adult world has come and gone. And to be honest, it’s been filled with plenty of ups and downs. I’ve arguably learned more during this past year than in college…almost. This year has been spent learning about finances, friendships, and careers, and so much more.
I call this the year of “it’s okay.” Meaning, I’ve had to remind myself, and some of my friends, that it’s okay to not have everything figured out and to be totally overwhelmed by this new season of life.
Here is my list of “It’s Okay’s” and tidbits of what I’ve learned thus far.

1. It’s okay to lose friendships

Some friends are easy to hang onto year after year, and others take a little bit of work. Don’t try to hold onto to every friend you’ve made over the years. Growing up is inevitable and some people just aren’t in the same place they were before. It’s okay to kindly let go of friendships that are not adding substance to your life. In high school, friendships were often based on quality, not quality. As you get older, you learn that quality is most important. Find out who you want to share your life with.

2. It’s okay to get rejected

Applying for “grown up” jobs isn’t always quite as easy as applying for jobs in high school or college. Applying to multiple jobs means getting multiple rejections, or even no response at all. This may dent your confidence, but for every rejection, there is an acceptance out there waiting for you. Take the time to perfect your resume and build connections by networking.

2. It’s okay to not understand finances

Money is confusing, at least to this non-math girl. Am I paying too much for insurance? What exactly am I being taxed for? How do I budget myself? These are questions I’ve asked myself multiple times this year. And honestly, I’m still not sure of the answer. If you don’t know the answer, try looking to the two P’s: Pinterest and parents. Granted your parents are likely more informative, Pinterest also has links to great blogs and websites that may help you navigate through your financial woes.

3. It’s okay to be an independent woman

Is it just me or is everyone getting engaged right now? Or at least in serious or semi-serious relationships. It can sometimes be a downer to go to yet another wedding date-less. And although being alone or the 3rd wheel can be rough, embrace this time of singleness. Who has time for men when you’re working on being a Girl Boss? Make these post-grad years all about you, and when the time is right, someone will jump in and run along side you.

4. It’s okay to move back with your parents

Moving back in with your parents after graduating can seem like you’re taking 5 steps back. But if you’re not financially comfortable to move out on your own, this is your best option. Moving as an adult is not as easy as moving out of your childhood home and going to college. You have to find a place to live, near your job, in a safe area, and within your budget. Sometimes this is just not possible. If you are able to move back home, I say, do it!
There are days when it can be tough to live with my parents and sometimes it feels like I’m back in high school, but in the long-run, I’m confident it will make a lasting impact. Since I don’t have to pay rent, I get to save money to move almost anywhere. Not to mention, the kitchen is usually stocked with food and goodies. What could be better? Remember, you have the rest of your life to live on your own.

5. It’s okay to not be where you want

Growing up takes time. Don’t expect the pieces of your life to fall into place after graduation. I LOVE the quote that says, “Don’t compare your beginning to someone’s middle.” I’m always looking at Facebook and Instagram and it’s usually filled with my old high school or college peers embarking on a fun adventure or reaching career goals. It makes me feel like I’m 5 steps behind, which can get pretty discouraging.
Remember, social media is not an accurate portrayal of anyone’s life. Don’t base where you think you should be on where everyone else is. Everyone’s path is their own. Create your own unique path, set some goals, and what is meant to be, will be.

6. It’s okay to have a job that sucks

As wonderful as it would be to jump right in and work at an amazing company or become a manager or lead, it likely won’t happen right after graduation. It’s okay to be the person who goes on coffee runs for the company or stuffs envelopes all day. But with that being said, it’s also okay to quit. If a job is holding you back, move on and find something better. Be realistic with your expectations, but also remember to keep taking steps forward. Sometimes you have to start at the very bottom in order to work your way up. Be willing to work hard because success does not come overnight.

7. It’s okay to go on an adventure

Explore a new country, state, or even city. Get out and see what life is like in different places. Try not to get stuck in a little bubble and try exploring new perspectives and sights. Go on a hike in a new city, drive to a nearby state, or even go on a road trip with no specific destination. Go on a mini vacation once in a while, you deserve it. Maybe plan a trip to visit an old roommate or college friend!
Remember, we’re all just winging it. Regardless of age, none of us have life figured out. Even our parents and mentors are learning every day. In time, you will end up right where you’re supposed to be. Don’t be afraid to dive into something new and take risks!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve gotten?

LOVING LATELY...

As we all know, I LOVE Target. But then again, who doesn't!? My latest trip inspired this post because there were just so many things I wanted to slip into my cart. But even though my heart says yes, my wallet usually says no.

I am super excited for the Lilly Pulitzer line to come out on April 19th! (Check out the look book here.) My mom and I were definitely lusting over all the colorful products. I haven't really liked Targets past few collabs, but I think this one is going to be a winner in my book! Those candle holders & nail polishes...YES.

Also, I am obsessed with "coffee" graphic tees. Seriously, it's a problem. I guess I just like to make my love of coffee known to the world.

I love hearing about fun Target finds. What is your recent Target fave? Or what's on your wish list?

Denim vs. The Washing Machine

I'll admit, I don't wash my jeans every time I wear them. I have a couple favorite pairs that I'll wear 2-3 times a week. When you invest in a great pair of perfectly fitting jeans, you don't want them to fade and stretch in the washing machine.

Even the CEO of Levi Strauss has said that he hasn't washed his favorite pair of jeans in over a year! A WHOLE year! Okay, I don't think I could last an entire year without washing my favorite H&M jeans. But as gross as this idea may sound, bacteria can't actually live on your jeans.

A college student wore his jeans for 15 months without washing them to find out if this can actually be hazardous to your health. The answer: No!  The amount of bacteria found after a couple wears, compared to the bacteria levels after 15 months, were found to be nearly identical. I understand the desire to keep your favorite jeans in mint condition, but going an entire year without washing may be a little excessive. I don't know about you, but considering of often I spill my white mocha, my jeans have to get washed quite a bit.

So how often should you wash your denim and ensure they stay good as new?

1. Wash your jeans approximately every 4-5 wears.

There isn't a fancy formula as to how often you should wash your jeans. It's up to your own discretion. If you're more active and tend to sweat (or spill everything, like me), you may want to consider washing your jeans more frequently, if not after every wear. But assuming you keep up with general personal hygiene, you can probably get away with washing every few wears.

Now you may be wondering, what if they start to smell a little funky? Stick them in the freezer! Yup, you read that right. Simply seal them in a freezer bag, leave them overnight, and by morning, they'll feel and smell fresh and clean! Keep in mind, this won't actually clean them, but they'll feel a whole lot better.

2. How to Wash:

In order to keep the longevity of your jeans, first turn your jeans inside-out. Turning them inside-out will keep their color from fading. Next, wash with cold water, and avoid putting them in the dryer. The dryer can shrink your denim and affect the overall shape. Instead, hang dry for a few hours or put them on while they're a little damp so that they can conform to your body as they dry for a better fit.

3. Dark Denim:

If you have favorite dark wash denim, you don't want to lose that fabulous color in the wash. To keep your dark jeans looking...well, dark, try washing them with vinegar. Why vinegar? Vinegar seals in the dye and prevents it from bleeding or fading. Simply add 1/2-1 cup of vinegar to your cold wash cycle and turn your jeans inside-out. Voila!

Alternatively, you can take a note from Levi's CEO and never wash them! Don't worry, I won't judge you.

Keep in mind, jeans really do conform to your body shape, and the more you wash them, the more this shape becomes lost. Follow this washing method to keep your jeans looking good as new!

Where do you go to buy your favorite denim?

Leather Weather

For some reason, whenever I hear the word "leather," the image of Britney Spears in her all red leather outfit from her "Oops I Did It Again" days, instantly pops into my head. While I will admit, I envied this early 2000's look (especially around Halloween time), I've always thought leather was a little...bold for me. I've never considered myself to be edgy enough to rock a shiny pair of pants or a skirt.

I am here to tell you, I was very wrong! Leather has completely transformed my previous safe and simple style. If you love the comfort of leggings, then leather (or pleather leggings), are perfect for you!

I took a risk and finally purchased my first pair of pleather (faux leather) leggings from Forever 21. Although I was a bit intimidated by this new style, I bravely wore them to my friend's birthday dinner. Not only did they add some major style to my otherwise dull all black outfit, but they were unbelievably comfortable! (Not to mention, I got quite a bit of compliments.)

Comfort and style?! I'm sold!

This leather trend doesn't just end with leggings either. I am loving the look of pleated leather skirts and even shirts with touches of leather. I even plan on wearing my new leather skirt paired with a red flannel for upcoming Christmas festivities (see number 2 under leather skirts).

See the various way this style can be incorporated into your wardrobe. Check out some of my favorite looks for inspiration!

Leather Leggings:

Leather leggings can easily be dressed up or down and easily transition from day to night. Keep it simple while running errands by pairing it with a chambray or long, loose fitting tee. At night, dress it up with a pair of your favorite heels and a darker colored blouse.
I love the look of number 2 for a girls night or for holiday parties. Number 4 also perfectly illustrates how adding leather to an outfit can be the perfect look for running errands or a weekend brunch.

Leather Skirts:

3. Pink Peonies

Although I love the look of leather leggings, I'm even more excited about leather skirts. Since it doesn't get too cold in California, I can pretty much get away with wearing skirts year round. For those of you who live in colder climates, this trend is perfect for incorporating leather during spring or with a pair of tights.

Leather Shirts:

In case you're a little apprehensive, like I was, about trying out this bold, black look, a leather shirt is perfect for you. Outfits number 1 and 3 add just enough leather to any outfit while keeping true to your own style.

Leather can add some edge and contrast to a feminine outfit. If you're ready to try out this chic look, check out where you can get your hands on this wardrobe essential!

Planners for the Planner

The weeks leading up to the New Year always have me thinking about ways I want to improve my life. This year: organization. I am all about planners and keeping track of what I need to do and what's to come for each week.
Unfortunately, this organization-high only lasts about a month before I resort to plastering sticky notes around my room or trying to remember everything and hope for the best!

I used to think planners were really only necessary to remember class assignments and tests, but as soon as I began my post-grad life, I realized planners are a must!

Between work meetings, lunch dates with your best friend, and grocery shopping lists, it becomes pretty difficult to keep track of everything. And as much as I'd like to think I can remember everything, truth is, I can't. Studies have even shown that when you write something down, you're more likely to remember it.

Who doesn't love that fulfilling feeling of crossing out tasks that you completed? Not to mention, good time management skills are a great quality to have. And what's more motivating than super cute planners?!

But this year is the year I become an organization pro!

Take some time to map out the future this year. Document what's coming up next and get it done!

I've rounded up some of my favorite planners that are sure to help kick-start your organization resolutions!

How do you keep track of your schedule? Are you a planner-lover? Do you rely on your phone? Or do you just wing it and hope for the best?

The Makeup Super Tool

There is nothing I love more than a well-done winged eyeliner. If you've experimented with this makeup look, then you know that "the wing" can make or break your day. When you get your wings even, you feel ready to conquer the world.

Now, for all of us who are still practicing and perfecting this look, I have the perfect tool for you!

http://www.eyeslipsface.com/studio/face/cleansers/makeup_remover_pen
e.l.f. Makeup Remover Pen

This is a Makeup Remover Pen by e.l.f. Cosmetics and I believe it was created by a makeup genius.

I used to use a Q-Tip with a dab of makeup removed to correct any of my mistakes, but that can be messy and it's pretty challenging to get a clean straight line with the rounded tip. This pen is so much easier to use and it has become my makeup must-have!

First, it has the remover right on the applicator, which eliminates any oily mess. But my favorite part is the super pointy felt tip. It makes it extremely easy to smooth out and sharpen those wings.

Not only is it a lifesaver for eyeliner mistakes, but it is also perfect for those pesky specks of mascara you get on your eyelid, especially after all that time spent on creating that smokey eye. All you need to do is dab a little on the mark and dab it lightly with your finger to eliminate excess remover oil. Don't forget to gently wipe the felt tip on a tissue to remove the makeup. Voila! No one will guess you ever made a mistake!

Oh and did I mention it's super inexpensive?! You can find it for $3 at Target. Gone are the days when you dread creating the perfect winged eyeliner or cry over smeared mascara.

Do you have a makeup product that you just can't live without? Will you be adding this tool to your makeup bag?
